Overview

Climb Africa’s highest peak via the classic and historic Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro — often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route.”

The Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro trail that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it a popular choice for trekkers seeking added comfort during their ascent. The route follows a direct path up and down the same trail, passing through lush rainforest, scenic moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone.

This 6-day version includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, significantly improving summit success rates compared to the 5-day option. With well-graded trails, professional mountain guides, experienced porters, and structured altitude management, this itinerary provides a balanced blend of challenge, safety, and comfort.

Standing at Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is a life-defining achievement — and the Marangu Route offers a classic way to reach the Roof of Africa.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

In the evening, meet your head mountain guide for a full briefing covering the route, altitude awareness, safety procedures, daily hiking expectations, and gear check.

Overnight at hotel on bed and breakfast basis.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, transfer to Marangu Gate for registration and park formalities.

The trek begins through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, moss-covered trunks, and rich birdlife. You may spot blue monkeys or colobus monkeys along the trail.

The path is well-defined and gradually ascends to Mandara Hut.

Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut (shared wooden huts with beds and mattresses).

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Leaving the rainforest behind, the landscape opens into moorland with giant lobelias and senecios.

On clear days, you will enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Summit. The steady climb allows your body to adapt gradually to increasing altitude.

Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Optional hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m)

This additional day is crucial for acclimatization and significantly increases summit success rates.

You will take a short hike toward Zebra Rocks or nearby elevations before returning to Horombo Hut. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to altitude.

Afternoon rest and hydration are emphasized.

Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek crosses the Saddle — a vast, barren alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The terrain becomes more rugged and vegetation disappears as you approach high altitude.

Arrive at Kibo Hut by early afternoon. After early dinner, rest in preparation for the midnight summit push.

Overnight at Kibo Hut.

Hiking time: 10–14 hours | Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland

Around midnight, begin the challenging ascent to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable and emotional moment. After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.

This is the most physically demanding day of the climb.

Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland to Rainforest

After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate.

Upon arrival, receive your official summit certificate.

Transfer back to your hotel for well-deserved rest and celebration.

After breakfast (if post-climb night included), transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.

You depart Tanzania with the unforgettable achievement of standing on the highest point in Africa.
