Overview

Climb Africa’s highest peak via the popular and scenic Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Commonly known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is one of the most chosen trails due to its breathtaking landscapes, strong acclimatization profile, and high summit success rate. The 7-day version allows better altitude adjustment compared to the shorter 6-day option, significantly improving summit chances.

This route approaches from the south-west and offers incredible scenery through five distinct ecological zones — rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit terrain. The trail follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, which enhances acclimatization and prepares climbers for a successful summit attempt at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

With experienced mountain guides, professional porters, quality camping equipment, and structured altitude management, the 7 Days Machame Route provides a balanced, scenic, and rewarding Kilimanjaro experience.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

In the evening, meet your head guide for a comprehensive climb briefing covering route details, daily expectations, safety procedures, altitude awareness, and equipment check. Any missing gear can be rented locally if necessary.

Overnight at hotel on bed and breakfast basis.

Hiking time: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration.

The trek begins through lush rainforest filled with giant ferns, ancient trees, and possible sightings of monkeys and exotic birds. The steady ascent introduces you to the mountain environment while allowing gradual acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp.

Hiking time: 4–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Leave the forest behind as the landscape changes dramatically into moorland terrain. The trail becomes steeper, offering spectacular views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance.

Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon for rest and acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

An important acclimatization day. You ascend steadily to Lava Tower, experiencing thinner air before descending to Barranco Camp.

This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves altitude adaptation. Barranco Camp sits beneath the impressive Barranco Wall with stunning sunset views.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling but manageable scramble. From the top, enjoy panoramic views across glaciers and valleys.

Descend into Karanga Valley before a short climb to Karanga Camp. This shorter trekking day supports further acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trail gradually ascends through rocky alpine terrain toward Barafu Camp, your summit base.

Upon arrival, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. An early dinner is served before a few hours of sleep ahead of the midnight ascent.

Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp.

Hiking time: 10–14 hours | Habitat: Arctic Zone to Rainforest

Around midnight, begin the challenging summit push under a starlit sky.

Reach Stella Point at sunrise before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit is an unforgettable moment of achievement.

After photos and celebration, descend to Barafu Camp for rest and continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, descend through beautiful rainforest to Mweka Gate.

Receive your official summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel for relaxation.

After breakfast (if post-climb night included), transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.

You depart Tanzania with the unforgettable achievement of standing on the Roof of Africa via the iconic Machame Route.
