Overview

Climb Africa’s highest peak via one of the most scenic and highly recommended routes on Mount Kilimanjaro — the breathtaking Lemosho Route.

The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote western side, offering a quieter start and exceptional panoramic views across the Shira Plateau. Known for its excellent acclimatization profile and high summit success rate, this 8-day itinerary allows gradual altitude gain, giving trekkers the best possible preparation for reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Trekkers pass through diverse ecological zones — from lush rainforest and heather moorland to alpine desert and the arctic summit zone. The route later joins the Machame trail, combining dramatic scenery with a well-paced ascent.

With professional mountain guides, experienced porters, quality camping equipment, and structured acclimatization, the Lemosho Route offers an ideal balance of comfort, safety, and adventure for those seeking a rewarding Kilimanjaro experience.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

In the evening, meet your head guide for a detailed climb briefing, gear inspection, and safety overview. Missing equipment can be rented locally if required.

Overnight at hotel on bed and breakfast basis.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, drive to Lemosho Gate for registration and park formalities.

The trek begins through lush rainforest filled with tall trees and diverse wildlife. The gentle ascent allows your body to begin gradual acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Leave the forest behind as the landscape opens into moorland. The trail ascends onto the Shira Plateau with impressive views of Kibo Peak.

The steady pace supports proper acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 1 Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Today’s relatively gentle hike crosses the wide Shira Plateau. This is an important acclimatization day with gradual altitude gain.

The scenery becomes more dramatic with lava formations and expansive mountain views.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

A crucial acclimatization day. The trail climbs steadily to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle.

Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall, offering spectacular sunset views.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling but non-technical scramble with breathtaking panoramic views.

Descend into Karanga Valley before ascending to Karanga Camp.

This shorter day supports acclimatization and recovery before the summit phase.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trail gradually ascends through rocky alpine terrain to Barafu Camp, your summit base.

Upon arrival, rest, hydrate, and receive your final summit briefing. Early dinner and sleep are essential before the midnight ascent.

Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Hiking time: 12–14 hours | Habitat: Arctic Zone to Rainforest

Around midnight, begin the challenging summit push toward Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable achievement. After celebration and photos, descend to Barafu Camp for short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate.

Receive your official summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel for well-deserved rest.

After breakfast (if post-climb night included), transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.

You depart Tanzania with the unforgettable achievement of standing on the Roof of Africa via one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic routes.
