Overview

Conquer the highest mountain in Africa via the most scenic and highest-success route on Mount Kilimanjaro — the spectacular Northern Circuit Route.

This extended nine-day trek is specifically designed to maximize acclimatization, increase summit success rates, and provide a quieter, more immersive mountain experience. Unlike shorter routes, the Northern Circuit approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote western side, crossing the vast Shira Plateau before circling the rarely visited northern slopes with breathtaking panoramic views toward Kenya.

Trekkers journey through five distinct ecological zones — from lush rainforest and heather moorland to alpine desert and the dramatic arctic summit zone. Along the way, expect awe-inspiring landscapes, glacier views, wide-open horizons, and fewer crowds compared to other routes.

With gradual altitude gain, professional mountain guides, experienced porters, quality camping equipment, and full board support throughout the trek, this route offers the perfect balance of safety, comfort, and adventure.

Reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is not just a climb — it is a life-changing achievement.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (or Arusha Airport), you will be warmly welcomed by your mountain representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha.

Depending on your arrival time, relax at the hotel, recover from your journey, or explore the town. In the evening, meet your lead mountain guide for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing and full gear check to ensure you are fully prepared for the adventure ahead.

Overnight in Arusha on a bed-and-breakfast basis.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, drive approximately 3–4 hours to Londorossi Gate for registration. Continue to the trailhead where your trek begins.

The trail winds gently through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, moss-covered trunks, and tropical birdlife. This section offers a peaceful introduction to the mountain and opportunities to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys.

The moderate ascent allows your body to begin adjusting to altitude gradually.

Dinner and overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Leaving the rainforest behind, the vegetation transitions into open moorland with giant heather and volcanic rock formations.

The trail steadily climbs onto the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. On clear days, you will enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak rising ahead.

The pace remains slow and steady, following the important “pole pole” principle for acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 1 Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Today’s trek is relatively gentle, crossing the wide Shira Plateau. This is an important acclimatization day with gradual altitude gain.

The landscape becomes more dramatic and expansive, with lava ridges and volcanic rock scenery. Afternoon rest and short acclimatization walks may be organized depending on group condition.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

This is a key acclimatization day. The trail climbs steadily to Lava Tower at 4,630m. Some trekkers may begin to feel the effects of altitude here.

After lunch near Lava Tower, descend to Moir Hut. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves summit success rates.

The alpine desert landscape is rugged and dramatic with stunning mountain views.

Dinner and overnight at Moir Hut.

Hiking time: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today you begin the true Northern Circuit traverse. The route crosses remote northern slopes rarely visited by other climbers.

Expect spectacular views toward Kenya and wide open high-altitude plains. The terrain includes rolling hills and volcanic formations.

This quieter section offers solitude and panoramic scenery.

Dinner and overnight at Buffalo Camp.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Continue across the northern side of the mountain. The trail undulates gently, allowing active recovery while maintaining acclimatization.

The open skies and distant summit views create a powerful sense of scale and isolation.

Dinner and overnight at Third Cave Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

A gradual but steady ascent leads to School Hut, your summit base camp.

After early dinner, your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing. Rest is crucial as the summit push begins shortly before midnight. Hydration and preparation are emphasized.

Overnight at School Hut (early rest).

Hiking time: 12–14 hours | Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

Around midnight, begin the challenging ascent to Stella Point (5,756m) and onward to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment. After celebration and photos, descend carefully to School Hut for short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.

This is the longest and most physically demanding day of the expedition.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

A final descent through lush rainforest brings you to Mweka Gate.

Here you receive your official summit certificates and bid farewell to your mountain crew.

Transfer back to Arusha for well-deserved rest.

After breakfast at your hotel (if post-climb night included), transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight.

You leave Tanzania with the extraordinary achievement of standing on the Roof of Africa — a memory that will last a lifetime.
